Today was a day of contrasts. We woke up in the cute tiny house in the manicured backyard of a Keith and Tara.
We maneuvered the line up of parents dropping off children at school and found our way to a Rails to Trails pathway.
While we were still in an easy going frame of mind, we stopped for a late breakfast and planned our route to get through Baltimore as we headed to Havre de Grace. Once off the pathway our riding style had to change to ultra focused (survival mode). We passed through industrial areas with poor roads and big trucks, construction areas with lots of debris, extremely run down tentement houses, abandoned buildings, and a population of people that appeared sad and discouraged.
We got to the harbor connector in an area that was being built up… Under Armour has their headquarters there. The Baltimore shot was at 11:11. The ferry was at 11:15! 😅
We hoped the ferry would bypass the challenging areas of Baltimore, but that was not the case. We focused on getting through and hoped for a more bike friendly experience. Our final 30 miles were on a busy roadway with a bike lane that varied in size from 8’ to about a foot. It really wasn’t pleasant, but we knew Tim’s brothers Jeff and Tom were going to be at the end of it.
We celebrated a safe arrival and a brotherly reunion at a new brewery in town. Market Street Brewery.
Strolling through Havre de Grace, a quaint town on the Susquehanna River, we discovered lots of recently painted murals all in the same area.
Passing by a little library we took an opportunity for a photo.
We enjoyed a dinner by the waterfront.
The walk back was guided by a great lighthouse mural.
Daily stats 64 miles. 2050’ accumulated climbing
