5/7/23 Richmond to Fredericksburg VA

Another glorious day!  Leaving a big city on a Sunday morning is probably the best time to enjoy the route. We had a good size breakfast at the hotel this morning because we knew we would be  on rural backroads the vast majority of time. On the way out of town we got a few photos of artisan talent as we were exiting Richmond.

Soon we were in quiet neighborhoods then the very quiet countryside.

At 11:11 it was just rural sweetness!

When we were at about halfway we stopped to have our packed snack at an old abandoned corner store.

Today we had to use all of our gears.  The terrain changed from rollers yesterday to gentle hills today.  Peddling up hills with loaded panniers was challenging, but the descents were awesome.   I had fun utilizing my “aerodynamic” tuck for the  sweet down hills. Tim calls me “the mother tucker” 😆.

Just before we rolled into town, we decided to stop at Maltese Brewing Company for a flight and a food truck snack.

Fredericksburg has a quaint Main Street.  Shortly after we cleaned up the rain showed up in full force, so we didn’t explore much beyond Water’s End Brewery and Billiken’s Smokehouse at the Chimneys.

Today was a 70 mile day with 2,150’ of ascents.
