We road through the historical downtown of Vicksburg, MS and could easily see how the economy and floodwaters have made this city, like so many others, into deserted buildings. There were many homes/trailers that showed the elevation of the recent floods and the devastation it caused.
An unusual sight in Louisiana and Mississippi is a certain variety of vine (Kudzu) that takes over everything.
A flat tire is never fun, but at least today the change was quick and in the shade.
Today we tried to stop in a handful of towns on route, to grab a bite and fill our waterbottles. Unfortunately for us and for these small towns and businesses, there was only one town in a 75 mile stretch that had a place where we could replenish. The downturn of the economy has hit these small communities hard. We were looking forward to coffee at this place... but it also was a pile of rubble.
Another place we stopped wasn't open, but it did have entertainment. There were 6 kittens altogether with their mother.
Much of today's route was along the Mississippi River Trail, following the Great River Road. We really didn't see the Mississippi River until we got to Greenville!
The final 20 miles were hot, flat and draining.
We made it into Greenville just before 2:00. Took awhile to find a hotel near the (deserted) downtown, but we finally did.
There were a few restaurants that looked interesting, unfortunately all were closed because it is Sunday!!! The nearby casino had a restaurant that was closed due to flooding damage. Our only option (without getting on our bikes and riding 5 more miles) was delivery pizza. It was tasty.
