We didn't see any live alligators, but met the former mayor of Alligator while snapping the mural photo.
This old fella told us we need to come back at night to view alligators. (I don't think so.) He also let us know that his town of Alligator got it's name because the lake bordering the town is in the shape of an alligator.
To get out of Alligator, we decided to follow the road that passed through the town back to the highway. We got more of an adventure than we bargained for; traveling about 3 miles on a gravel road with barking dogs and in an area that at times seemed a bit "iffy". It was good to get back to the highway.
While on the road we are always on the lookout for the water towers indicating the next town. This one is from Clarksville, MS, birthplace of the Blues.
Clarksdale was an interesting town, it had many vacant shops and businesses, but also some pretty cool places.
In the historic downtown we chatted with some local (who thought we were crazy) and they suggested two places to have a bite. The first place Ground Zero Blues Club was an old warehouse that was owned by Morgan Freeman and Bill Luckett, politician running for MS governor. This place was a piece of work. Every wall, ceiling, piece of furniture and fabric had writing or grafitti on it!
They weren't open yet for lunch, so we went to Delta Amusement Cafe and shared a great plate of delicious blackened catfish. In the back room of this cafe a group of friendly older gentlemen gathered to socialize and gamble... their form of delta amusement.
With only about 30 miles to the casino that we would be staying at, we took our time to travel on the back roads.
I thought this colt was so cute nursing, as I walked over for the photo, they both turned to pose!
"Everything is for sale, tell your friends" is what the elder gentleman told me about the well displayed items.
The hotel casino we are at for the night just reopened last week due to the extensive flooding. No damage to the establishment, but as seen in these photos from last month, the whole casino was surrounded by water.
Plenty for dinner tonight!!! We got a free buffet for signing up for a players club. Full belly... time for sleep.
