Our final day in Mississippi included the best roads, weather and conditions!
We road on quiet roads about 25 miles to our breakfast stop in the very cute town of Tunica. The breakfast joint, recommended by a local, was a wonderful establishment that has been in that location since 1937.
While at the restaurant, we watched the forecast on TV and began to get a little concerned. We thought we needed to high tail it to Memphis... and luckily mother nature was extremely cooperative, with nice tail winds most of the way. We got to the state line around 10:00!
The final 16 miles to our hotel were through a seedy part of town (all part of the adventure) and made it to the historic downtown Memphis just before 11:00 - way before the storm front. Visited a coffee shop and explored a bit of Beale Street while waiting for our room to be ready.
We got cleaned up and booked ourselves on the Memphis Backbeat Bus Tour, to see where rock'n'roll really began. We learned about the start of such greats as BB King , Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash.
The tour included live music along with the great history. I got to play the tambourine!
Tonight we plan on checking out the fun on Beale Street. It is very similar (maybe a little tamer?) to Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Tomorrow is a free day in Memphis.... so no curfew tonight! :-)
