It was a metric century ride today - 62 miles. We were on the designated bike route - mostly on hwy 17. It was a beautiful weather day; cool morning that turned into a mild sunny day with little wind. Hooray!
We passed many historic sites, including the Butler Island plantation in Darian. The historical sign tells of the “Weeping Time” the largest sale of human beings in US history.
.
While in Darian we enjoyed a mocha and homemade blueberry bread made by the grandma of the young man running the cafe. We had fun hearing his stories and learning a bit more about Darian.
For the next 20 miles the hwy 17 was a quiet road with a nice cycling shoulder and it’s of wonderful wildflowers along the roadside. Spanish moss seems to grow on everything here.
11:11 - Basic straight road with lots of green on either side and wildflowers sprinkled in.
We stopped in to see the “The Smallest Church in America”. It only seats 12 people.
The last half of the ride was less pleasant. There was much more traffic on the road including large lumber trucks and semi’s . The concern was also the debris in the bike lane that was extra narrow due to the rumble strip. We were happy to get to the hotel without a major incident.
After cleaning up we checked out the Peach World Shop then had a tasty dinner at The Local on 17 restaurant.
Hi guys. Steve here. Love those burgers and shakes. I can’t wait to hear some of the stories of your trip when you get back. Some of the country sides look very nice there. Are you experiencing any of the humidity yet?
ReplyDeleteYou really are seeing a lot of interesting places. Looks like great fun. You ride so far each day. Amazing trip.
